Building culturally sensitive schools requires a better understanding of new immigrant groups by teachers as well as students. In order to establish a classroom environment that is culturally sensitive to Micronesian students, teachers may want to initiate classroom activities that raise cultural and linguistic awareness. The paper by Hilda Heine on culturally responsive schools answers frequently asked questions about Micronesian students that we hear in our visits to Hawaii schools. About Micronesia contains links to a brochure on the Pacific region served by PREL, a fact sheet on the Compacts of Free Association, and a list of languages of Micronesia. PREL Resources features links to publications and a CD-ROM produced by PREL about the Pacific region. Links to Pacific websites include extensive resources about the region. More information on individual U.S.-affiliated Pacific entities is available in the Pacific Service Region. |
