Educational Technology and Distance Education

In today’s world, technology is a tool that underlies much of what we do. We create, communicate, and share information rapidly using a variety of technological tools. PREL focuses on the educational applications of emerging technologies.

PREL’s educational technology workshops integrate technology with teaching and learning in ways that are locally and culturally relevant. Our educational technology workshops provide hands on practice for educators who seek to integrate technology into curriculum in science, social studies, language arts, and math. Our workshops include ways in which technology can motivate and assist English language learners and special education students.

PREL’s distance education initiatives provide access and capacity building. Our distance learning courses provide professional development for educators, using emerging technologies. PREL courses utilize a “blended” or “hybrid” model of distance learning, combining asynchronous technologies (web-based courseware, email) with synchronous methods (face-to-face workshops, web-based “virtual classrooms”).

E-RATE

E-Rate is a 2.5 billion dollar a year program to provide 50% to 90% discounts for telecommunication services to schools. To receive this funding, the school must have an approved technology plan. PREL has been designated as one of the few organizations that can approve technology plans for any school in the United States. For more information about E-Rate go to http://www.universalservice.org/sl/.
