| Lesson 6.6: Profile of Reading Instructional Practices
Focus: Use the Profile of Reading Instructional Practices, K-3 in this lesson to observe and provide feedback to a colleague.
Prior to the Collaboration Group Meeting
1. Reflection Journal
Write in your reflection journal prior to the Collaboration Group meeting. You are to respond weekly in your journal, reflecting on your learning, observation, questions, and personal connections. Your reflections need to be at least 250 words. You may choose how to format your journal, though you may want to consider the following as you write:
- What are some new understandings you made this week as a result of the work for this lesson and your work with your students?
- How has this new understanding influenced your current practice?
Bring your reflection journal to the weekly Collaboration Group meeting, and prepare to share your entries.
2. Readings
NOTE: To print the linked documents, do the following:
- Put your mouse on the document and right click. You will see a window that asks you where you want to download the document.
- Determine where you want to save the document.
- After saving the document, open and print it in MS Word.
- Read Profile of Reading Instructional Practices, K-3 and Expanded Profile of Reading Instructional Practices, Module 6.
- Arrange with another participant to conduct classroom observations of each other. If you do not have a classroom, find a teacher who is willing to allow you to work in his or her classroom or partner with another participant who does have a classroom.
3. Classroom Observation
- Observe another participant for approximately 2.5 hours or for an entire lesson using Expanded Profile of Reading Instructional Practices, Module 6. The purpose of the observation is to provide your peer with effective feedback and to learn from him or her.
- After having a preconference with the peer you will be observing, decide which of the following areas to include in your observation: Literature Discussion Groups, Effective Questioning and Effective Feedback, Fluency Development, Comprehension Strategies, or Vocabulary Development.
- Observe in one or more areas. Leave the areas on Expanded Profile of Reading Instructional Practices, Module 6 blank that you were not able to observe.
- After the observation, arrange for a time to review the lesson with your peer. After the discussion give him or her Expanded Profile of Reading Instructional Practices, Module 6 to keep in a file.
- Using Expanded Profile of Reading Instructional Practices, Module 6 of the peer that observed you, complete the Peer Check column in Snapshot Profile of Reading Instructional Practices, Module 6. Bring both profiles to the Collaboration Group meeting.
- At the end of Module 7, a summary of the progress made according to Profile of Reading Instructional Practices, K-3 will be requested.
During the Collaboration Group Meeting
- The facilitator leads the Collaboration Group in:
- Sharing reflection journal entries.
- Sharing observations and profiles, and discussing the following questions:
- What did you learn about your own teaching as a result of working with your observer?
- What did you learn about your students?
- What did you find most helpful about working with your observer and how do you think it will impact your work?
- Determine the facilitator, recorder, timekeeper, date, time, and location for the next Collaboration Group meeting.
