Lesson 6.5: Vocabulary Development

Focus:
Understand the importance and implementation of effective vocabulary instruction.

Prior to the Collaboration Group Meeting

1. Reflection Journal

Write in your reflection journal prior to the Collaboration Group meeting. You are to respond weekly in your journal, reflecting on your learning, observation, questions, and personal connections. Your reflections need to be at least 250 words. You may choose how to format your journal, though you may want to consider the following as you write:

    • What are some new understandings you made this week as a result of the work for this lesson and your work with your students?
    • How has this new understanding influenced your current practice?

Bring your reflection journal to the weekly Collaboration Group meeting, and prepare to share your entries.

2. Readings

NOTE: To print the linked documents, do the following:

    • Put your mouse on the document and right click. You will see a window that asks you where you want to download the document.
    • Determine where you want to save the document.
    • After saving the document, open and print it in MS Word.
  1. Read Put Reading First (pp. 34-45). Make notes about three or more concepts that you feel are key to understanding vocabulary instruction and explain why. Also note any questions you have and be ready to share at the Collaboration Group meeting.
  2. Read Vocabulary Instruction Overview.

3. Classroom Application

    • Think about the information provided in Put Reading First (pp. 34-35) and the Vocabulary Instruction Overview.
    • Plan a lesson that includes vocabulary development. The lesson can be a small group guided reading, shared reading, read aloud, or about a content area such as science or social studies.
    • Teach the lesson to a small or large group of students. Write a summary of how you incorporated vocabulary development into the lesson. Include in the summary a description of how the vocabulary instruction you provided helped the students better understand the reading selection. Also note how your vocabulary lesson related to the research included in the readings you did for this lesson.

During the Collaboration Group Meeting

  1. The facilitator leads the Collaboration Group in:

    • Sharing reflection journal entries.
    • Discussing Put Reading First (pp. 34-45) and the key concepts and questions noted.
    • Sharing comments or questions about Vocabulary Instruction Overview.
    • Sharing the vocabulary lesson taught and how it helped the students learn the new words. Include reference to some of the vocabulary research and how the lesson reflected what research says about vocabulary instruction.
    • Discussing what is particularly important to know about vocabulary instruction for the students in their unique cultural setting.

  2. Determine the facilitator, recorder, timekeeper, date, time, and location for the next Collaboration Group meeting.

After the Collaboration Group Meeting

  1. Email to the instructor the Vocabulary Lesson Summary. Send your assignment(s) to the instructor as an attachment to an email message. Be sure to include your name, date, location, and title on the document. Also, include your name and lesson title in the file name, for example, moses_vocabulary_summary.
  2. The recorder emails the Collaboration Group notes to the instructor and places a copy in the Collaboration Group Notebook.
  3. The timekeeper emails the attendance to the instructor.
