Lesson 1.4: Key Elements in Reading

Focus: Examine the key elements in reading – phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Review the findings of the National Reading Panel (NRP) and the key elements of reading.

Prior to the Collaboration Group Meeting

1. Reflection Journal

Write in your reflection journal prior to the Collaboration Group meeting. You are to respond weekly in your journal, reflecting on your learning, observation, questions, and personal connections. Your reflections need to be at least 250 words. You may choose how to format your journal, though you may want to consider the following as you write:

    • What are some new understandings you made this week as a result of the work for this lesson and your work with your students?
    • How has this new understanding influenced your current practice?

Bring your reflection journal to the weekly Collaboration Group meeting, and prepare to share your entries.

2. Reading

Complete Anticipation Guide and read the book Put Reading First: The Research Building Blocks for Teaching Children to Read. Revisit the Anticipation Guide to see if you want to change any answers to match what you read in the book.

3. Key Terms and Concepts Activity

Using Put Reading First, define the key terms listed on the Key Terms and Concepts Activity sheet. Bring the completed sheet to the Collaboration Group meeting.

During the Collaboration Group Meeting

  1. Share your reflection journal entries.
  2. Divide Put Reading First into the following five sections: Phonemic Awareness, pages 1-10; Phonics Instruction, pages 11-19; Fluency Instruction, pages 21-31; Vocabulary Instruction, pages 33-45; and Comprehension Instruction, pages 47-57.
  3. Break into groups and assign each group a section to summarize, including responses to the following questions.
    • What did you learn from this section of the book?
    • What did you wonder about?
    • What connections did you make?
    • What questions do you have?
  4. Then take turns summarizing the different terms found on the Key Terms and Concepts Activity sheet and explain what they mean. Continue to add to your sheet based on what you learn from the other participants.
  5. Determine the facilitator, recorder, timekeeper, date, time, and location for the next Collaboration Group meeting.

After the Collaboration Group Meeting

The timekeeper emails the attendance to the instructor.
