A Focus on Professional Development is the fourth booklet in the Research-Based Practices in Early Reading series published by the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) at Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL). The purpose of this booklet is to examine what research tells us about effective professional development in early reading and its role in improving student achievement.

A Focus on Professional Development Forum
The successful Focus Professional Development in Early Reading Forum was held June 8-9, 2005, in Honolulu, Hawai'i Over 200 teacher, principals, and state literacy leaders attended PREL's fourth national leadership conference. Forum participants came from 23 states, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and the territories of Guam and American Samoa. The Forum examined research on professional development in early reading and brought together nationally recognized researchers to present and discuss the most current research and knowledge on the topic.
