Assessing Reading Fluency
by Dr. Timothy V. Rasinski discusses research on assessments
for monitoring students’ fluency development in terms
of the following components of fluency:
- Accuracy, or accurate decoding of words
in text;
- Automaticity, or decoding words with
minimal use of attentional resources; and
- Prosody, or the appropriate use of phrasing
and expression to convey meaning.
Examples are provided.
Dr. Rasinski is a professor of education
in the Department of Teaching, Leadership, and Curriculum
Studies at Kent State University. He has published over 100
articles and 10 books on various aspects of reading education,
including The Fluent Reader: Oral Reading Strategies for
Building Word Recognition, Fluency, and Comprehension.
Dr. Rasinski is an editor for the Journal of Literacy
Research.
