PRELStar, a Star Schools grant, operated for 9 years, from 1997 to 2006, working with American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM: Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Yap), Guam, Hawai’i, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and the Republic of Palau.
Through this project, over 500,000 students were served through dissemination activities, student courses, and professional development for teachers. Because PRELStar worked with partners such as the Hawai’i Department of Education’s (HIDOE’s) Teleschool branch, Pan-Pacific Education and Communication Experiments by Satellite (PEACESAT), E-Rate, other Star Schools projects, and cable television companies in all the entities to build capacity, the majority of the program’s work will continue to serve teachers and students for years to come.
With funding from the U.S. Department of Education, Star Schools Program, Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) held two Star Schools grants. Star Schools programs were grants awarded to telecommunications partnerships among local school districts, state departments of education, public broadcasting entities, and other public and private organizations to support distance education projects.
