Math Science Consortium

The Pacific Eisenhower Mathematics and Science Regional Consortium was a collaboration primarily among PREL, the Curriculum Research and Development Group at the University of Hawaii, and 10 Pacific departments of education. The vision for mathematical and scientific literacy for all Pacific children guided the work of the Consortium from its inception in 1992 until the project ended in 2005. The Consortium also participated in and contributed to national mathematics and science improvement efforts while serving the needs of the Pacific region.

The Consortium’s collaborative design used a regional advisory board, a mathematics and science leadership team, and Entity Planning and Implementation Committees. These groups, and others, contributed to the development of Strategic Plans for Improving Mathematics and Science (SPIMS), which guided improvement in each entity and across the region. The Consortium carried out activities to assist, train, and provide technical assistance to classroom teachers, administrators, and other educators as they strove to identify, adapt, implement, and assess mathematics and science education instructional materials, teaching methods and assessment tools to meet the needs of the educational community across the region. This was accomplished by carrying out standards-based research-driven technical assistance and professional development, establishing and supporting the Pacific Schools Mathematics and Science Partnerships, and disseminating and assisting educators to interpret information about effective programs and practices in mathematics and science education.

As a result of the work of the Pacific Consortium: (a) strategic plans for improving mathematics and science were developed across the region; (b) there was increased access to information about effective mathematics and science programs and practices, including those from the Pacific; (c) standards-based instructional materials suitable for the various educational contexts found in the region were increasingly available; (4) and, teacher practice become increasingly standards-based, and students demonstrated increased engagement and/or improved performance in mathematics and science.
