Institute of Museum and Library Services Pacific Library Training Institute (IMLS PLTI)

In 2005, Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) received a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to conduct a 3-year project designed to provide training for “preprofessionals” from island libraries in the U.S.-affiliated Pacific (American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Guam, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau). PREL wrote the Pacific Library Training Institute (PLTI) grant in response to a survey that established training as the primary need for libraries in these Pacific island nations.

This IMLS-funded project includes three training institutes, to be held in the summers of 2006, 2007, and 2008. In summer 2006, the first institute was held, and 19 participants were selected from academic and public libraries. The PLTI was held in the University of Hawai‘i (UH) at Mānoa library. Dr. Karen Peacock, Curator of the Pacific Collection at UH’s Hamilton Library, was the lead instructor, working closely with PREL’s Pacific Resource Center Director, Ms. Jane Barnwell, who administers the grant.

In 2007, the PLTI focused on school librarians. The institute was held July 16–August 3 on the University of Guam (UOG) campus. The lead instructor was Christine K. Scott-Smith, the Director of UOG’s library.

UH will again be the site of operations in 2008, when the focus will be special libraries, such as archives, museums, government agencies, and legislative bodies. Dr. Peacock will instruct the 2008 cohort.
