Programs

Center for Information, Communications, and Technology (CICT)

Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) is organized internally into three Centers of Excellence, one of which is the CICT. The CICT supports PREL’s diverse programs in their work in the Pacific region and around the world.

PREL brings together in the CICT an experienced cadre of specialists in website development and design, educational technology, distance and online learning, multimedia production, interactive software development, library and information science, writing and editing, graphics, print production, and educational outreach and resource services. By combining tested pedagogy with leading-edge technology, PREL can create learning materials encompassing a wide variety of subject matter and delivery methods. PREL’s CICT partners with researchers, educators, evaluators, and publishers to develop state-of-the-art learning tools for classrooms, distance learning services, real-world professional development options, and unique Web interface solutions.

There are vast disparities across the Pacific when it comes to school resources, technology access, and Internet bandwidth. PREL’s goal is to work effectively in any type of setting in which an application is needed. With routine travel and a staff presence throughout the Pacific, PREL has resolved to reach underserved communities, determine their needs, and meet their requirements with the appropriate delivery and dissemination methods.

The purpose of the CICT is to provide a single focal point for information about PREL. In addition, the CICT actively supports outreach to PREL’s constituents for all of the work that PREL undertakes, ensuring that PREL’s mission is supported with appropriate expertise. The dissemination of PREL’s resources is a critical responsibility that includes direct services, technical assistance, consulting, training, and professional development.

Multimedia, Software, and Website

Conception, design, and delivery of multimedia, software, and websites have become critical components of many learning programs. Our projects include development of teacher and student resources and resource kits, learning games, software solutions, and complex interactive database design.

Distance Learning Content and Delivery

By extending educational resources to audiences and individuals outside the classroom setting, distance options both enhance and exponentially increase learning opportunities. The CICT is a premier provider of distance education, integrating curriculum and technology.

High-Quality Publications

PREL is known for its high-quality publications. Among the numerous publications PREL produces and distributes for educators are its research compendium, Research into Practice; Pacific Educator magazine; educational books and videos; and briefs on research findings and current topics of interest.

www.prel.org

PREL’s website is a critical component of both information and outreach for PREL’s products and services. The website presents key information about PREL’s work, as well as links to downloadable publications.

Information

The AskPREL service request system on the website is the pathway to information about PREL’s work, products, and services. Requests come to PREL from virtually all around the globe. PREL actively participates in a wide range of local, national, and international conferences and meetings, and CICT staff provides integral support to these activities through interactive exhibits, displays, and dissemination of information and products.

Pacific Resource Center (PRC)

PREL’s library serves as a focal point for materials that directly support PREL’s programs. In addition, the PRC provides access to selected online resources for the entire PREL service region, including the EBSCO databases and Stat!Ref, a collection of full text medical resources. EBSCO Publishing indexes more than 11,000 magazine and journal articles in all subject areas, including education, health, business, computing, current events and news, and social issues. Over 6,600 articles are available in full text through this important resource.

Partnerships

The CICT will continue to enhance and expand relationships with education, library, health, and telecommunications partners to improve access to educational resources. The CICT will seek out opportunities to increase the capacity of schools, libraries, and public health providers and assist these learners in utilizing and applying information and educational technology through training, infrastructure development, and communications enhancements.

Awards

PREL has received numerous awards and recognition for innovative and content-rich software programs and websites.
