Preface

This issue of Research Into Practice, PREL’s annual research compendium, brings together articles detailing research conducted during 2005 by PREL. The articles focus on putting research findings to work to improve education. This issue addresses:

  • Using artistic and aesthetic experiences and children’s natural interest in their visual environment to develop literacy.
  • Teacher certification systems in use nationally, internationally, and regionally, as well as trends and alternative or nontraditional methods for teacher certification.
  • The process of developing a research-based Pacific language early reading assessment template.
  • Information and communication technology (ICT) in education in the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau.
  • The methodological challenges of recruitment, retention, and attrition of study participants.
  • School reform as related to college access for low-income and minority youth.

The articles in this volume were originally published or presented in other forms, many with very limited circulation: as articles in refereed journals, as reports to funding authorities, as doctoral dissertations, or as commissioned white papers. We bring these works together in one volume to share them with a wider audience of our constituents and partners. By doing so, we hope to contribute to the body of work that supports education in the Pacific and around the world.
