Board of Directors
PREL is pleased to welcome Mr. John Mangefel, former Governor of Yap, FSM, and Dr. Randy Hitz, Dean of the College of Education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, to its Board of Directors. Mangefel and Hitz have both accepted positions as constituent representatives.

Assessment Institutes
In June, week-long assessment institutes were held in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Republic of Palau. These institutes provided valuable experiences for hundreds of teachers and administrators, who learned skills involving assessment and accountability, leadership, instruction, and classroom formative evaluation. They were conducted by Pacific Assessment Systems and Services (PASS), a PREL program dedicated to serving the assessment and accountability needs of schools, districts, and states through quality professional staff development, technical assistance, and products. For more information about PASS services, please contact Dr. Donald Burger, Director, at (808) 441-1342 or burgerd@prel.org.

Literacy Through Art
An innovative professional development activity combining art, flower arrangement, and writing was offered to K-12 teachers in Honolulu, June 10-14. This hands-on workshop demonstrated effective teaching strategies for improving literacy through the arts and presented methods proven especially helpful for English as a Second Language students and kinesthetic-visual learners. It was team taught by Dr. Lori Phillips, Director of the Pacific Center for Arts and Humanities in Education (PCAHE) program at PREL, Mr. Roy Otagura, Flower Arrangement Instructor, and Ms. Quala-Lynn Young, Artist and Classroom Creative Writing Teacher. The workshop was an extension of Image to Word – Word to Image, a program developed by Phillips. Image to Word – Word to Image professional development activities are held periodically throughout the Pacific region. Please contact PCAHE at (808) 441-1340 for information on upcoming events.
