Before beginning the photography, drawing, and writing activities, Erin's students created this word board. Creating a visual mind-map of concepts and ideas that they had been studying all year helps students recall and make connections between the many things they learned about intertidal environments. They started with the word "intertidal," the theme of their marine biology studies this year. They were asked to brainstorm related words and to answer questions such as "Why did you study this?" and "What is the importance of intertidals?".

Using Inspiration software, the students' brainstorming session was captured to create the word board below. This can be used later in the project to help students recall purpose and vocabulary as they do the writing portion of the Picturing Science project.
