Zooanthids/Anemones

Photography, Artwork, and Writing by:

Very beautiful but extremely toxic, this organism’s looks can be deceiving. Some zooanthids are toxic and their poison was once used on the tips of ancient Native Hawaiian weapons. On the other hand zooanthids’ toxin can kill many native and endemic marine organisms.

The tentacles of the zooanthids sway like the hands of a hula dancer. When the tentacle touches something it lets out a poisonous venom. This venom could kill if it enters your blood stream, and it also is dangerous to other organisms.

Zooanthids are blue and purple creatures that sting prey and their enemies. Once disturbed they suck their tentacles into their body as if a vacuum were pulling them. Their stinging method, blue and purple color, and meatball-like shape are essential to their survival. They are between the bottom creatures and middle creatures in the food chain. They are an important part of the food chain, because many creatures depend on them. If they disappear, then the food chain will collapse.
