"Hanauma Bay: Hawai‘i's Protected Marine Treasure "
by
Joseph Lileikis

The protected reef in the bay gently provides a flourishing existence within the hydrosphere.  The coconut trees on the sand provides protection for the curious and energetic guests just as the reef provides protection for the organisms  and sea life within.  More than 100 species of fish have settled in Hanauma Bay in addition to the abundance of corals and other living organisms.  The protected boundaries span approximately 300 feet from shore and offer the curious snorkeler the underwater experience of a lifetime.  Hanauma Bay,  will remain Hawaii’s protected marine treasure as long as the principles of  environmental stewardship remain a priority in our society.
