The Pacific Educational Conference (PEC) is one of the largest gatherings of educators in the Pacific region. The Teacher of the Year (TOY) recognition program, sponsored by Pacific corporate partners, is one of the conference traditions that began in 1996. This program provides an opportunity for excellent teachers from American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia (Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Yap), Guam, Hawaii, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau to attend the three-day conference. The TOYs are invited to an evening reception with the chief state school officers (CSSOs), curriculum chiefs, traditional chiefs, and government officials. They are introduced by their CSSO and receive gifts of educational materials. They also attend a teacher luncheon, where they have a chance to get acquainted and share teaching strategies. The opening general session of the PEC is their moment, as each CSSO recognizes their entity’s teacher of the year and presents a gift of appreciation.
This program continues with the support of generous Pacific partners.
