Mr. Joseph Villazon

Director of Education, Pohnpei State Department of Education

Mr. Joseph Villazon, Director of Education, Pohnpei, joined PREL in 2008. Mr. Villazon has over 20 years of teaching experience and has been a school leader since 1985. Mr. Villazon was the chief of secondary education from 2003 to 2008, and vice principal of  Bailey Olter High School (PICS High School at the time) from 1998 to 2003. Part of the Leadership Team for Accreditation since 2004, Mr. Villazon has served as acting principal in Nanpei Memorial High School (NMHS), Hopwood Junior High School (HJHS), and former PICS. Prior and during his involvement as school leader, Mr. Villazon also has extensive experience in various classrooms, including teaching high school science at HJHS and former PICS, as well as being a core subjects classroom teacher at Kolonia Elementary, Tafunsak Elementary, and Nett Elementary.
Mr. Villazon was recently presented with a Governor’s Award as a certification of appreciation for the establishment of NMHS in Kitti Municipality. In 2004, he was also honored with a Director’s Award as Department of Education Staff of the Year.
Mr. Villazon holds a bachelor of science degree in education from Western Oregon University (formerly Oregon College of Education) and an associate’s degree in elementary education, and he has continually attended teacher and technical training sessions in Hawai‘i, Guam, and the continental U.S.
