Dean, College of Education, University of Hawai'i
Dr. Christine K. Sorensen is the dean of the College of Education at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, where she oversees nine academic departments housing undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs, and two major research centers. Prior to her appointment at the University of Hawai‘i, Dr. Sorensen served as the dean of the College of Education at Northern Illinois University, and briefly as the associate dean for academic affairs at the same university. With over 18 years’ experience dedicated to the field of education, Dr. Sorensen has taken roles as assistant department chair in two departments at Northern Illinois University (Leadership in Educational and Sport Organizations and Curriculum and Instruction); assistant professor in Curriculum and Instruction, Northern Illinois University; research and evaluation specialist at the Research Institute for Studies in Education, Iowa State University; private consultant in research and evaluation; and adult student advisor for off-campus students.
Dr. Sorensen was author and leader on Project REAL, a project involving five colleges focused on improving K–12 student performance in an urban school district, and was a leader in developing an elementary partnership school focused on integrating the arts and technology in another district. She emphasized the importance of school-university partnerships through establishing formal partnership agreements with ten school districts (urban, suburban, and rural). Dr. Sorensen has been the principal investigator on numerous grants and has received several research awards. Her research has focused on technology integration, distance education, and organizational change and leadership.
Dr. Sorensen earned her doctor of philosophy and master of science degrees in Professional Studies in Education—Higher Education from Iowa State University. Her bachelor of arts degree is in Speech Communication from the University of Houston.
